The town of Fergus, with a population of 23,000, is one of several rural communities that make up the County of Centre Wellington, which is located in southwestern Ontario, just over 100 km West of Toronto and approximately 24 km North of Guelph. Fergus and Elora, the primary communities, are charming heritage towns, offering a thriving cultural scene, a variety of festivals, events, outdoor adventures and year-round attractions.
Rural family physicians provide the bulk of the care to this community with support from local internists, general surgeons and obstetricians. Groves Memorial Community Hospital (GMCH) is part of the Wellington Health Care Alliance (WHCA) (including hospitals in Mount Forest and Palmerston). It provides a comprehensive range of surgical, inpatient and outpatient services, including 24/7 emergency care.
This program is designed to prepare residents for a fulfilling career as rural family physicians, equipped with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in various medical contexts.
