Department announces new research director
The department is pleased to announce Dr. Fiona Kouyoumdjian, assistant professor as the new research director for the Department of Family Medicine effective January 1, 2024. Fiona is a family physician, public health and preventive medicine physician, and epidemiologist. She is an associate member of the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI) and adjunct scientist at the ICES Central.
She has been a member of the department since 2016. During that time, Fiona has demonstrated an impressive commitment to research and scholarly activities. She is the lead investigator of the prison health research program, which focuses on preventing incarceration, improving health care in prisons, and supporting continuity of health care on release. Her work in this area involves partnership, collaboration, and consultation with persons with lived experience of incarceration, governmental authorities, and non-governmental stakeholders, as well as a variety of other researchers.
Fiona is the recipient of the 2023 Excellence in Supervision Award from the Faculty of Health Sciences Postdoctoral Association (FHS PDA). The FHS PDA grants this award to mentors who have displayed exceptional support for postgraduate fellows’ research.
She completed residency in family medicine and in public health and preventive medicine at the University of Toronto, and a PhD in epidemiology in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.
