The Canadian Atlas of Palliative Care: British Columbia Edition is now available

A palliative care atlas describes the status of palliative care across several domains in a jurisdiction (e.g., provincial level and regional levels) using a combination of text descriptions and maps. Domains include policy, services, community engagement, education, professional activities and focused populations. Atlases highlight successes and excellence, identify gaps and inform planners and policymakers with the overall goal of system quality improvement. Many other regions across the world have palliative care atlases, however Canada has never had one.
Data collection and validation included using publicly available data, surveys to regional, provincial and educational leaders, interviews and focus groups with regional and provincial leaders, active clinicians and others involved in the delivery of palliative care, and member checking.
As a part of the Dr. Joshua Shadd Pallium Canada Research Hub, two provincial Atlases, British Columbia and Ontario, were created. An atlas for Alberta was created by researchers at the University of Calgary.
The Canadian Atlas of Palliative Care: British Columbia Edition is now available. Ontario and Alberta will be available later this year.
